SERVING FOR 100+ YEARS

For more than 100 years, the Cleveland Mounted Police have impacted the community.

ROOTS WITH FIRST CLEVELAND CAVALRY

The history of the Cleveland Mounted Police Unit has its roots with the First Cleveland Cavalry, which was organized on October 10, 1877 to respond to the Great Railroad Strike in the summer of the same year.

CLEVELAND MOUNTED POLICE TODAY

Today, the Cleveland Mounted Police’s day-to-day function is typically picturesque or ceremonial. Being assigned to the Traffic Department, the Cleveland Mounted Police handle crowd control and neighborhood watch assignments because of their mass and height advantage. The mounted police are symbols of community policing in Cleveland.
